Find Clarity, Find Purpose – What are your opportunities?
My catalyst for self-development
I took a class in 2017 that changed my life. It was an inspiring experience, in which the teacher presented some of Humberto Maturana’s ideas, from his studies on Cultural Biology.
I probably can’t quote it properly, but want to reflect the way it hit me. Something like: ‘everything organizes around what we want to preserve’ (like what happens with all the living organisms, like a cell of an organ, recovering from an injury).
So, the question for any change or transformation, in the moment of chaos and confusion, is “what is the thing that I want to preserve?”- what is the thing that’s so important that I would keep it just how it is now?
That class served as a catalyst for a very important self-development journey and made a few significant changes in my life since then. That’s what you do, when you have clarity of purpose!
This is very personal, and I am happy to share it here because it is an important reflection I would like to encourage us all to make.
Setting boundaries of where you want to be
What is that, in your life, that is so precious and important to you that you want to preserve the way it is? And in your relationships? And in your career? And in your company? And in the service you deliver?
Once this is clear, then you will have set the boundaries of where you want to be, and now can find space for improvement, for innovation, for rediscovery, redesign, change, transformation and growth.
At Grumpy Lemon, we always provoke this reflection, using endoStrategy™, in the very early phase of our projects. In our opening client interviews, we talk with them about the boundaries of the things they want to preserve. When we have clarity on what is important, then we can start our immersion process, understanding problems and working to identify opportunities in all other spaces.
